Questions
Is Thing.pub really free?
Yes. Reading, writing, and collaborating are free forever. Memberships and cosmetics are optional extras that help fund the platform.
What happens to my perks if I cancel?
Your membership perks and any subscription cosmetics stay active until the end of your billing period, then lapse. Cosmetics you bought outright are yours permanently.
Does it cost anything to sell my work?
There is no monthly fee to open a store. We take a commission only when you make a sale, and pass payment processing through to you at cost.
How do I get the reduced 2.5% commission?
Automatically, once your store passes $5,000 in sales over a rolling 12 months, your rate drops from 5% to 2.5%. It stays reduced for as long as you keep clearing that bar.
Why is payment processing charged separately?
Card processors charge roughly 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. We show it as its own line and pass it through at cost rather than burying it inside a larger cut, so you can see exactly where every cent goes.
Do authors have to pay for Patron?
No. Publish a work for sale and Patron is included free: premium themes, early access, and all, for as long as you have a live listing.
Free to read. Fair to sell on.
No ads, no data resale, no paywall on your work. Thing.pub stays free to use, funded by optional memberships and a small cut of direct sales.
